In the past couple of years, a growing number of Filipinos have found their respective niches in blogging as a source of income. This has spawned a new breed of bloggers often referred to as probloggers, short for professional bloggers. These are people who write for the purpose of directly or indirectly earning from a blog by leveraging on its traffic, readership, influence, credibility and/or popularity.
A Generation of Professional Bloggers
There are five basic classes of probloggers, defined by how they derived revenue from their blogs. These are the traditional/independent probloggers, celebrity probloggers, and blog network owner.
The Traditional or Independent Problogger. This problogger manages most, if not all, aspects of maintaining his or her blog: installation, setup, design, writing, blog optimization, marketing and sales. A vast majority of probloggers started out as independent depending on how succesful they monetize their blog.
The Corporate Blogger. This type of problogger who works for a company with a specific job description that will involve blogging for the company's official blog. This type of blogger may come from the sales, marketing or the PR department, and is tasked with communicating with other companies, clients and the rest of the industry through blogging. Sometimes an entire department is assigned to do blogs along with a single point person.
Carrer Problogger. Career probloggers work for a blog network or a number of networks, either part-time or full time. They will be assigned to write for a specific niche blog (like travel, gadgets, cooking) on the assumptionthat they are fairly knowledgeable with these topics. The problogger's only concern is to blog, while the network provides all technical, marketing and sales efforts.
The blogger will be paid a fixed salary ($250 up), or per post ($5-$10 per post), or by way of profit sharing (40%-60%), or a combination of any of these schemes.
Celebrity Problogger. This kind of blogger has followers and loyal readers in the tens, if not hundreds, of thousands. The celebrity probloger has made a name for himself or herself through the blogosphere, and not because he or she was already known in mainstream of traditional media.
Product endorsements, sponsorships and subscriptions contribute a huge chunk of this problogger's revenue. Jason Kottke was able to accumulate a total amount of $39,900 in donations last year from his readers, and he never served a single ad on his blog.
